JOY-SOUTHFIELD
Supporting our Local City of Detroit
The Joy Southfield Community Development Corporation (JSCDC) and Global Health Alliance at the University of Michigan have been working together since 2010. Since the formation of our partnership, both sides have provided each other with the tools necessary to accomplish our respective goals and ambitions. These goals include creating the surrounding Southfield community a much more health-conscious city, as well as empowering students and communities to collaborate and work together to improve the health of all people. Through our partnership, we (students of GHA at the University of Michigan) have been fortunate enough to assist with many projects such as the Farmer’s Market, Cooking for a Change, and Dixon Elementary Mentoring/Health Guidance. We have also had the opportunity to meet the JSCDC board, their respective staff, and the native Southfield community as we strive to provide the JSCDC with assistance in their projects in their surrounding community.

In the near future, we hope to provide the JSCDC assistance and support with improving the well-being of the surrounding community through health/wellness based activities and projects. In the next year, we hope to assist with the LYFFE framework and implement our and the JSCDC’s objectives and ambitions into their respective projects.

The Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation is located west of Detroit. About 40% of the residents in the community live below the federal standard for poverty and 20% of the residents above the age of 18 lack a high school diploma. The JSCDC aims to strengthen their surrounding neighborhoods through economic development in the community as well as family life-assistance support. The JSCDC accomplishes this mission by providing primary health care for the uninsured and insured, community gardening & a farmer’s market, youth mentoring, and local economic development
